Household hazardous waste and sandbag collection begins for residents affected by flooding

The City will be starting to collect special household hazardous waste and sandbags for residents affected by flooding.

Special household hazardous waste collection starts May 17

House-to-house collection of special household hazardous waste will start on Wednesday, May 17 and Thursday May 18, and will continue on Wednesdays and Thursdays for three weeks.

Household hazardous waste must be kept separate from other debris.. These items will not be collected at the curb. Please have the items stored outside, in a location clearly visible and accessible from the road.

Material must be left in a box or container. Any leaking containers should be placed in a secure container or be double-bagged and clearly labelled “HHW material.” Containers will not be returned to residents, aside from any blue bins or black bins.

Sharp objects must be in sealed plastic containers. Any loose sharp objects will be left behind.

Hazardous waste can consist of anything corrosive, flammable or poisonous. This can include items such as:

  • Aerosol containers
  • Propane cylinders
  • Disinfectants
  • Fluorescent bulbs/tubes
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Fertilizers and pesticides
  • Mercury switches/thermometers
  • Needles and syringes
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Paints and coatings
  • Oven and window cleaners
  • Pool chemicals

Sandbag collection

Flood-impacted residents can now dispose of their sandbags by bringing them to the curb. Sandbags must be kept separate from other debris. Bags do not need to be emptied before disposal.

With 250,000 bags throughout the affected areas, the collection process will take a few weeks to complete.

Do not use the sand in beaches, gardens or sandboxes as it may be contaminated. Keep sand away from wells and waterways.

In addition, residents can also use the Waste Explorer on ottawa.ca to find local retailers that accept household hazardous waste, all year long, during their hours of operation. These retailers are participating members in the City’s Take it Back! program. Items can also be disposed of at a regularly scheduled City-run HHW depot.

The City of Ottawa’s Planning, Infrastructure and Economic Development Department has received an application for zoning by-law amendment and site plan control proposal for the development of a gas bar with fast-food restaurant, drive-through facility, and convenience retail use within a 250 square metre building. The site is located at the northwest corner of the Hunt Club Road and Hawthorne Road intersection.

The vacant lot is currently zoned to allow for a gas-bar and car wash; however the applicant is now seeking re-zoning to allow for a drive-through facility. The proposed one-storey building will accommodate a drive-through facility that has the capacity to hold ten vehicles in a queuing line. The site will be accessed by a right-in/right-out entrance off of Hawthorne Road and Hunt Club Road. For further details please visit ottawa.ca/devapps and search 3500 Hawthorne Road.

I invite you to attend a public information meeting where I have asked the applicant to present their application to the community. Please join me on:

  • Pizza for Parkinson’s Fundraiser Launch Event

    16:00-17:30
    2017-06-28

    http://dianedeans.org/event/pizza-for-parkinsons-fundraiser-launch-event/

I am happy to announce that my annual Parkinson Canada fundraiser, Pizza for Parkinson’s, is back for a third year! For the entire month of July, Boston Pizza (2980 Conroy Road) and KS on the Keys Restaurant (1029 Dazé Street) will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of every large pizza to Parkinson Canada. The funds raised will help provide programs and services in support of those living with Parkinson’s and those caring for them.

To kick-off this fundraiser, I would like to invite you to a launch event that I will be hosting at the Greenboro Community Centre (363 Lorry Greenberg Drive) on Wednesday, June 28 from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. For every donation of $5 or more to Parkinson Canada, patrons will be entered into a draw to win a prize provided by the participating restaurants!  Please stop by, enjoy some free pizza, and together we can help support members of the Ottawa community who are coping with this disease. For more information, please call my office at 613-580-2480 or email diane.deans@ottawa.ca.
